Echo Beach Surf Break

Echo Beach is one of Canggu's most iconic surf spots, known for its powerful left hand wave breaking over shallow reef. When a solid south swell hits during the dry season from April to October, it can produce heavy barrels that attract experienced surfers from across Bali. On higher tides the wave opens up into a long wall perfect for carving turns. Best surfed at mid to high tide with light offshore winds. The lineup gets crowded and competitive, so surf etiquette is essential. Watch the shallow reef on lower tides.

Pererenan Surf Break

Pererenan offers two distinct waves in one location just north of Echo Beach. The left at the river mouth delivers longer, cruisy rides ideal for cutbacks. The right is steeper and faster with hollow sections that barrel on the right swell. The reef and sandbar combination makes the wave shifty, and the river current can make positioning tricky. Works well on a mid tide with south to southwest swell, year round but cleanest from April to October. Generally more relaxed than Echo Beach, making it great for intermediates ready to push into more challenging waves.

Sandbar Surf Break

Sandbar is Canggu's spot for advanced surfers chasing steep, fast waves with power. This beach break produces A frame peaks that break quickly with force, leading into sections for big turns, aerials, and hollow barrels when conditions align. Because it is a sand bottom, the banks shift regularly so the wave changes week to week. Best surfed at mid to high tide on a solid south swell with glassy conditions, any time of year. Not recommended for beginners or early intermediates due to the speed and power.

Batu Bolong Surf Break

Batu Bolong is the most beginner friendly surf spot in Canggu and where most first time surfers catch their first wave in Bali. This mellow semi reef break produces gentle A frame waves with a long whitewater section close to shore that is perfect for learning. For those ready to progress, the channel leads out to longer green waves ideal for intermediates working on turns and wave reading. Works on most tides but best at mid to high when the reef is well covered. Consistent year round. Be aware this is Canggu's busiest break, especially mornings with surf schools and longboarders sharing the lineup.

Old Mans Surf Break

Old Mans sits just south of Batu Bolong and offers a natural next step for surfers who have built confidence in the whitewater. This semi reef break produces A frame waves with long rides, mixing smaller waves on the inside with more powerful sets further out. Best at mid to high tide with a moderate south swell, year round. The lineup is more spread out than Batu Bolong so you can find your own space more easily. If you have been surfing Batu Bolong for a few days and feel comfortable on green waves, Old Mans is where you should head next.

Berawa Surf Spot

Berawa Beach is the closest surf spot to WaveHouse Canggu, just a three minute walk from the camp. This long stretch of beach offers sandy bottom peaks that shift with the tides, creating different waves along the coast each day. The northern end produces mellower waves for beginners and longboarders, while further south towards the river mouth the waves pick up more shape for intermediates. Great for early morning sessions before the wind picks up, best at mid to high tide and cleanest from April to October. The sandy bottom makes it one of the safer spots in Canggu with no reef on wipeouts, and crowds are lighter than Batu Bolong.

Kedungu Surf Spot

Kedungu is a black sand beach break just north of the main Canggu area, offering a quieter, more raw surf experience away from the crowds. The wave is powerful with punchy peaks and hollow sections when conditions come together. Kedungu picks up more swell than most Canggu spots due to its exposed position, so it often has bigger waves when other breaks are flat. Best at mid tide with a southwest swell, primarily from April to October. Surrounded by rice fields and temples with an untouched feel that is increasingly rare on Bali's coast. Not ideal for beginners due to wave power and strong rip currents.

Seseh Surf Spot

Seseh Beach sits between Canggu and Kedungu and remains one of the quieter surf spots in the area. This long black sand beach offers a mix of peaks that produce fun walls and occasional hollow sections when the banks are good. Generally suited to intermediate surfers looking for uncrowded conditions and room to practice. Best at mid to high tide with a moderate south swell and morning glass, year round but cleanest April to October. Lined with traditional Balinese temples and coconut palms, Seseh has a completely different feel from the busier Canggu breaks. Watch for strong rips on bigger days.

Nelayan Surf Spot

Nelayan Beach is a small, often overlooked spot tucked between Berawa and Echo Beach. Named after the local fishing community, it offers a short but fun wave breaking over a mix of sand and reef. A solid option for intermediate surfers on days when bigger breaks are too crowded or too powerful. The wave is not as long as Batu Bolong or as heavy as Echo Beach, but it offers a punchy takeoff and enough face to work on turns. Best at mid tide with moderate swell, any time of year. Because it flies under the radar, Nelayan often has just a handful of surfers even when other spots are packed.

Cemagi Surf Spot

Cemagi is the furthest north of the greater Canggu surf spots, past Seseh towards Tanah Lot. This exposed beach break picks up plenty of swell and produces powerful waves along a long stretch of black sand. Rarely crowded because it is further from the main Canggu hub, making it a good escape for surfers who want waves to themselves. Best at mid to high tide with a south to southwest swell, primarily during the dry season from April to October. The surrounding area is still largely undeveloped with rice fields running to the coast and Pura Tanah Lot temple nearby. One for the more adventurous surfers who do not mind the extra drive for empty peaks.

Canggu Surf Spots

FAQ's

What are the best surf spots in Canggu for beginners?

Batu Bolong and Berawa are the most beginner friendly spots in Canggu. Both offer mellow waves with sandy or well covered reef bottoms, making them safe and forgiving for first time surfers. Old Mans is also a great next step once you are comfortable riding green waves.

Can you surf in Canggu all year round?

Yes. Canggu receives consistent swell every month of the year. The dry season from April to October generally brings the cleanest conditions with offshore winds and smaller crowds. The wet season still delivers solid waves, especially at more exposed spots like Kedungu and Sandbar.

What tide is best for surfing in Canggu?

Most Canggu surf spots work best at mid to high tide. At lower tides, reef breaks like Echo Beach and Pererenan become shallow and can be hazardous. Beach breaks like Berawa and Sandbar are more forgiving but still tend to have better shape on a rising or high tide.

Are there uncrowded surf spots in Canggu?

Yes. While Batu Bolong and Echo Beach can get busy, spots like Nelayan, Seseh, Kedungu, and Cemagi see far fewer surfers. Our coaches know the quieter breaks and can guide you to spots with more space depending on conditions and your level.

Which Canggu surf spots have barrels?

Echo Beach is the most well known barrel spot in Canggu, producing heavy left hand tubes over shallow reef on solid swells. Pererenan's right hand break and Sandbar also produce hollow sections when conditions align. These spots are best suited for advanced surfers comfortable in powerful waves.
